1. HEMLOCK PRINTERS
Hemlock was named the Most Environmentally Progressive Printer in Canada three years in a row. The company philosophy “Integrity in Colour”, summarizes things well for Hemlock, with priding themselves on reducing the environmental impact of the entire graphic arts industry. In 2007 they successfully eliminated 80% of all manufacturing-derived waste from the landfill stream. The company is also credited with developing Runninggreen, the EcoPrinting conference focusing on greening the print industry.
.
2. BALDWIN PAPER COMPANY
The main difference between Baldwin Paper and its competition is Custom Sheeting. Where most printers will just stock one size of standard paper and trim it to size, saving themselves money, Baldwin will stock multiple different sizes, in order to reduce the amount of waste. On their website you can even calculate how many trees you saved just by printing with them.
This is a great way to show how green your design company is, by letting a client know how many trees were saved.
3. NATIONAL ENVELOPE
National Envelope is the first envelope company to be certified by SmartWood, with meeting the standards of the Forest Stewardship Council. They are also members of numerous environmental organizations. For a full list of all FSC certified papers offered by National Envelope you can visit their website.
4. MOHAWK PAPER
Absolutely 100% of the electrical energy consumed at Mohawk Paper comes from wind energy. In 2003 they became on of the first printers in the USA to use wind as a supplier of electricity, and by 2007 were committed to using 100% wind energy.
Along with their commitment to wind energy, Mohawk has developed a series of sustainable paper called Bekett Cambric. The entire Beckett Cambric line is FSC certified, made carbon neutral, and manufactured with Green-e certified wind energy.
5. GREEN PRINTER ONLINE
Green Printer uses CO2 friendly eco papers and vegetable based inks in order to bring you the most environmentally friendly printing possible, every order saves trees, conserves energy, and reduces toxins in the air and water. You can even track your environmental impact using their Environmental Calculator.
6. BAREFOOT PRESS
Barefoot Press uses eco-friendly printing methods by choosing to use soy ink on recycled paper. They are also dedicated to becoming carbon neutral and have purchased enough renewable energy credits to offset all of its power consumption through the end of 2008.
Everything about Barefoot Press is environmentally conscious, right down to the building they operate from. When moving into their current location, they ÒrecycledÓ a 1950s-era industrial building, using sustainable materials such as bamboo floors, energy efficient appliances, lighting and windows.
7. GREENER PRINTER
Greener Printer has been a Certified Green Business since 2002 and offers tons of recycled paper options. They also purchase renewable energy credits to offset their energy usage by 100% through investing in wind energy.
8. GREEN PRINT CO
The main focus of Green Print is reducing unwanted pages to save paper, ink and trees by using their original software to format your print work.
Another great thing worth checking out is Green Print’s email signatures featuring sayings such as “By not printing this email you’ve helped save paper, ink, and millions of trees.” This is a great way to show your company’s green side, via email.
9. ECO PAPER
Eco Paper is one of the few environmentally friendly paper companies using tree-free papers made with sustainable and organic material. The paper is constructed using 100% post-consumer recycled materials and agricultural waste from Banana, Coffee, Mango and Lemon plantations.
10. INK WORKS
Inkworks is a Certified Green Business and stocks exclusively recycled papers from New Leaf Paper Company. Their printing methods focus on using vegetable oil-based inks resulting in the elimination of isopropanol (IPA) from their press fountain solution. IPA is a significant source of air polluting volatile organic compounds.

July 22, 2008 6:41 pmThis is exactly what I was looking for! A good eco printer that I can submit my clients designs to online, and have them shipped to the client. Thanks!

July 23, 2008 9:11 amGreat article and resources…but I think an amazing eco-printer missed the list. Pixxlz.com “We Print Green” (stupid name, great tag line) gives the customer a choice between 30-100% Post Consumer Waste Paper and also prints with soy inks and/or digital. I recently printed 5,000 postcards on 100% PCW paper and they were awesome. The turnaround time was great, the in-house designer was excellent (had to go in-house because their uploads kept freezing on me) and the price was really good. I allowed them to add their logo and info at the bottom and the cards were even cheaper than expected.

August 26, 2008 12:44 pmThank you for putting together this list and sharing! Rich at Barefoot Press is great and I wouldn’t have found them as a resource without you. In this critical phase of growth for my little company, it is time to outsource printing and I am determined to do it as eco-friendly, eco-luxe AND eco-budget conscience as possible. It may be difficult to find but thanks to valuable resources like yourself I just may be able to make it a reality. Many thanks!

March 31, 2009 5:15 amThis is a great list. Glad to see MOHAWK PAPER on here. Another great paper company is Monadnock Paper (http://www.mpm.com/). We use both, but Monadnock seems to have better quality 100%PCW than Mohawk.
I run an eco print company called Pixxlz (http://www.pixxlz.com). We utilizes state-of-art environmentally safe products in every stage of our no-waste printing process. We use chemical-free toner, soy & water based inks and recycled papers which all contribute to our ability to print green.
We have made printing green affordable. Keeping our prices low makes us feel like we’re helping everyone become a little more greener.
Happy Printing,
lindsey
